THE PRESIDENT: Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.
The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.
A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.
Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America -- with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.
Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local rescue efforts.
Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.
The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.
I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.
America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."
This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.
Thank you. Good night, and God bless America.

Radio Address of the President to the Nation
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This weekend I am engaged in extensive sessions with members of my National Security Council, as we plan a comprehensive assault on terrorism. This will be a different kind of conflict against a different kind of enemy.
This is a conflict without battlefields or beachheads, a conflict with opponents who believe they are invisible. Yet, they are mistaken. They will be exposed, and they will discover what others in the past have learned: Those who make war against the United States have chosen their own destruction. Victory against terrorism will not take place in a single battle, but in a series of decisive actions against terrorist organizations and those who harbor and support them.
We are planning a broad and sustained campaign to secure our country and eradicate the evil of terrorism. And we are determined to see this conflict through. Americans of every faith and background are committed to this goal.
Yesterday I visited the site of the destruction in New York City and saw an amazing spirit of sacrifice and patriotism and defiance. I met with rescuers who have worked past exhaustion, who cheered for our country and the great cause we have entered.
In Washington, D.C., the political parties and both Houses of Congress have shown a remarkable unity, and I'm deeply grateful. A terrorist attack designed to tear us apart has instead bound us together as a nation. Over the past few days, we have learned much about American courage -- the courage of firefighters and police officers who suffered so great a loss, the courage of passengers aboard United 93 who may well have fought with the hijackers and saved many lives on the ground.
Now we honor those who died, and prepare to respond to these attacks on our nation. I will not settle for a token act. Our response must be sweeping, sustained and effective. We have much do to, and much to ask of the American people.
You will be asked for your patience; for, the conflict will not be short. You will be asked for resolve; for, the conflict will not be easy. You will be asked for your strength, because the course to victory may be long.
In the past week, we have seen the American people at their very best everywhere in America. Citizens have come together to pray, to give blood, to fly our country's flag. Americans are coming together to share their grief and gain strength from one another.
Great tragedy has come to us, and we are meeting it with the best that is in our country, with courage and concern for others. Because this is America. This is who we are. This is what our enemies hate and have attacked. And this is why we will prevail.
Thank you for listening.

David W. Bernard
A Gracious Winner
David W. Bernard loved his family and he loved golf, and he liked to combine his two passions. Every July, he played in a father-son tournament — twice in one day — so he could do 18 holes with each of his sons, Mark and David Jr. Before his daughter, Jill, was married last summer, he arranged a foursome with his two boys and his soon-to-be son-in- law. And he taught his wife of 33 years, Nancy, how to play.
"He was very patient with me," she said. "He wanted me to play golf so that when we traveled together we could do it together." (In return, he went shopping with her.) Despite his low golf handicap (just nine) and his fierce competitiveness, Mr. Bernard was a gracious winner, said Mrs. Bernard: "Nobody could ever be mad at him. He just had a very easy way about him."
Mr. Bernard, 57, was an industry specialist for the Internal Revenue Service and was based in Boston. On Sept. 11, he was on his way to a meeting at the I.R.S. offices at 7 World Trade Center when the first plane hit the towers. He was struck by falling debris and died of his injuries on Dec. 11.

PATRIOT DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE, 2009

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
Through the twisted steel of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the scarred walls of the Pentagon, and the smoky wreckage in a field in southwest Pennsylvania, the patriotism and resiliency of the American people shone brightly on September 11, 2001. We stood as one people, united in our common humanity and shared sorrow. We grieved for those who perished and remembered what brought us together as Americans.
Today, we honor the lives we lost 8 years ago. On a bright September day, innocent men, women, and children boarded planes and set off for work as they had so many times before. Unthinkable acts of terrorism brought tragedy, destruction, pain, and loss for people across our Nation and the world.
As we pay tribute to loved ones, friends, fellow citizens, and all who died, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideas and ideals that united Americans in the aftermath of the attacks. We must apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security. We must also recommit ourselves to our founding principles. September 11 reminds us that our fate as individuals is tied to that of our Nation. Our democracy is strengthened when we uphold the freedoms upon which our Nation was built: equality, justice, liberty, and democracy. These values exemplify the patriotism and sacrifice we commemorate today.
In that same spirit of patriotism, I call upon all Americans to join in service and honor the lives we lost, the heroes who responded in our hour of need, and the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad. In April, I was proud to sign the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Originated by the family members of those who lost loved ones on 9/11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance is an opportunity to salute the heroes of 9/11, recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired our Nation following the attacks, and rededicate ourselves to sustained service to our communities.
Throughout the summer, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to lend a helping hand in their communities through United We Serve. As this summer of service draws to an end, we renew the call to engage in meaningful service activities and stay engaged with those projects throughout the year. Working together, we can usher in a new era in which volunteering and service is a way of life for all Americans. Deriving strength from tragedy, we can write the next great chapter in our Nation's history and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the promise of America.
By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2009, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with other ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.
BARACK OBAMA

- I received this in an email Thursday, September 13, 2001:
This is from the infamous Nostradamus predictions from over 500 hundred years ago. Rather eerie. He even predicted the angle of the plane.
Nostradamus' prediction on WW3:
"In the year of the new century and nine months,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror...
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city..."
"In the city of york there will be a great collapse,
2 twin brothers torn apart by chaos
while the fortress falls the great leader will succumb
third big war will begin when the big city is burning"
- NOSTRADAMUS
This was a pretty well known email that was circulating at that time. It turned out it was more than likely a hoax that someone started. I looked up a site that appeared knowledgeable on the writings of Nostradamus, and they said that he was not the author of it. It really did catch my attention though. It made a bit of my hair stand up on the back of my neck when I first saw it in the email.

Nannette Forteza rests her hand on the name of her husband during the Sunday dedication of the Flight 587 memorial on the fifth anniversary of the crash in New York City.
New York City dedicates memorial to Flight 587
Crash’s fifth anniversary elicits poignant, painful memories from families
NEW YORK - Bells tolled in a beachfront neighborhood Sunday as families clutching red roses and photographs gathered to read the names of loved ones killed five years ago in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg gathered with relatives of the 260 people killed aboard the airliner and the five killed on the ground, in the nation’s second deadliest air accident, to dedicate a memorial wall bearing the victims’ names.
“It is a place to which we can always return to read the names of those we lost five years ago, to share our sorrow and our memories, and to contemplate the eternal beauty and grandeur of the skies and the seas,” Bloomberg said Sunday.
A firefighter and a police officer rang bells at 9:16 a.m., the time the plane crashed just minutes after it took off from Kennedy Airport for a flight to the Dominican Republic.
Some family members then placed flowers by the wall, tearfully reading messages to loved ones in English and Spanish.
The memorial “is nice, but it’s not going to get back to what we really want, which is to be with them and to talk with them,” said Gladys Matos, whose aunt, Iris Santana De Acosta, was a passenger on Flight 587.
The curved memorial wall also bear a quote, in English and Spanish, from the writings of Dominican poet Pedro Mir: “Despues no quiero mas que paz/Afterwards I want only peace.”
“Now we can touch their names; we can see their names there,” said Belkis Lora, president of the Committee in Memory of Flight 587, who lost her brother in the crash. “To me, it’s like we’re going to be on board the aircraft in that memorial. Once we go to the memorial we’re going to be there with our loved ones.”
Ana Lora placed a model car by the name of her brother, Jose Francisco Lora, who collected cars. The 43-year-old had been flying home to the Dominican Republic after attending the first birthday party of Ana Lora’s son.
“I feel good being here, but it’s very painful,” Ana Lora said.
The crash on Nov. 12, 2001, in the quiet neighborhood of Belle Harbor, further rattled a city still shaken by the attacks on the World Trade Center just two months earlier. Many of the victims lived in Washington Heights, a heavily Dominican neighborhood in Manhattan.
Pilot error blamed
The National Transportation Safety Board determined that a crucial part of the tail fell off the Airbus A300, and the agency blamed pilot error, inadequate pilot training and overly sensitive rudder controls.
The road to building a Flight 587 memorial had its stumbling blocks. Many families wanted something at the crash site, but many neighborhood residents said a memorial wouldn’t fit in.
“We would like to see something where the plane came down, but it’s too late now,” said William Fernandez, whose cousin, Luis Arturo Pichardo, died in the crash. “They built a house there.”
Others in the area, which was home to many firefighters who died on Sept. 11, said they didn’t want a constant reminder of the tragedy. Some proponents of a memorial in the heavily Irish and Jewish neighborhood accused critics of racism against Dominicans.
In the end, the structure was set up about 15 blocks away in a less residential area near the Atlantic Ocean. The $9.2 million memorial was designed by Dominican Republic native Freddy Rodriguez and is being funded with private and public money.

Flight 587 Crash Memorial Dedicated
Yesterday morning, Mayor Bloomberg dedicated a memorial for American Airlines Flight 587, which crashed on November 12, 2001 in Belle Harbor, Queens. The Dominican Republic-bound plane had taken off from JFK Airport; turbulent air led the co-pilot to use the rudder to keep the plane up, but the rudder broke off. All 260 people on board - 251 passengers and 9 crew members - were killed when the plane crashed into the quiet residential neighborhood. Five people on the ground were also killed. Many of the plane's passengers were from Washington Heights and Astoria.
The memorial built 17 blocks from the crash site. From the NY Times:
The memorial is a curved and perforated wall, made up of blocks of vermilion granite from Canada. The 265 names, carved on 190 blocks, are arrayed alphabetically by surname, with some exceptions. Families are grouped together, as are the nine crew members and the five people who died on the ground.
Along the wall are holes of different shapes, where family members placed roses. The wall has a large portal with a view of the ocean; the lintel above it bears the inscription “Después No Quiero Más Que Paz” — “Afterward I Want Only Peace” — a line in a poem by Pedro Mir, a Dominican poet who died in 2000. On the plaza in front of the wall are a group of Aristocrat pear trees. Around the memorial, landscape architects planted Eastern red cedars, shore juniper, New York aster, red switch grass, pink coreopsis, beach rose, Montauk daisies and liriope.
There has been debate over the placement of the memorial - some families wanted it at the crash site, whereas many residents were against the idea. The NY Times notes that the current site at Beach 116th Street is "in a commercial district and close to a subway station" and that the Mayor also dedicated a marker at the crash site three years ago.
Many family members and friends were present at the ceremony. Angela Martinez, whose brother, sister-in-law and niece were killed, told Newsday, "We waited a long time for a place. Now we have a place to go on birthdays and at Christmas. I can come here with peace of mind." Brad States, the 15 year old son of the pilot, said, "My dad used to do a presentation at math-science day at our school and he used to give these [American Airlines wings pins]. So I'm going to leave one of these today."
The memorial was designed by Freddy Rodriguez, a Dominican-born Queens artist. You can see his design here.
